❓ Thoughts on a Clothing Swap

What do you think about the VMS hosting a clothing swap around February/ March?

Late Winter/ early Spring would be a great time for us all to do a closet clean out!

  • Men’s, Lady’s and Children’s clothing and shoes would be donated. All must be clean and in good condition.

  • We would sort them by category. Probably fold and organize them on tables.

  • VMS families and members of the public will be invited to come and shop by donation.

Is this something you would donate to?

Is this something you would come shop at?

Is this something you could volunteer for?

Battery Recycling Competition (until Nov 3)!

Dear Parents,

IN honour of Waste Reduction Week, Earth Rangers and Call2Recycle are challenging schools across British Columbia to participate in the Battery Blitz School Mission contest.

Silver Star Elementary is participating and students are being asked to bring their used batteries to school for the next four weeks, in order to be recycled. Any battery under 5 kg (with the exception of wet-cell batteries) can be brought in. Refer to Earth Rangers for guidelines on how to prepare household batteries for recycling.

Schools from all across BC are participating in the Battery Blitz Mission. Three amazing Cash Grand Prizes for the schools that bring in the most batteries by weight.

  • 1st place $1,500

  • 2nd place $1,000

  • 3rd place $500

Call2Recycle has collected and recycled almost 30 million kgs of batteries since the program has started!

Challenge closes November 3, 2023

Thank you to Saffron and Christie for sponsoring the new website!

Thank you to these two Mommas for getting the new website designed and running!

  • Saffron Quist (Solla’s Mom) spent about 75 hours designing and creating the new website and

  • Christie King (Alliyah’s Mom) donated $500 to cover hosting and operating for the entire year!

We appreciate this so much ❤

❓ Would you rather pay a biannual fee -or- volunteer time?

We’d love to hear from you! Using the comments box below let us know your thoughts.

The Montessori Program functions in partnership with School District 22. We are provided with classroom space, teachers and “regular” classroom supplies.

Beyond that, it is the responsibility of the Vernon Montessori Society (VMS) to pay for specialized Montessori materials, tools and programing.

  • The VMS is 100% run by parent volunteers.

  • It costs approximately $10,000 to outfit 1 classroom with Montessori tools alone.

Question: Would you rather…

  1. Pay a bi-annual fee of no more than $500,

  2. Volunteer a minimum number of hours annually, or

  3. Fundraise like a Girl Guide being chased by the cookie monster?

We are not positioned to approve anything yet. Just looking for feedback and suggestions :) Thank you!

🙋🏻‍♂️ FILLED - Fall M.A.L.T. Leaders

We are asking for parent/community volunteers who would be able to come and run an activity for our Fall session of M.A.L.T. (Multi Age Learning Teams).

Session possibilities could be crafts, art, hiking, carpentry, playground games, dance, science, drama, technology, geocaching, sports, cooking, board/card games, music, creative writing, clay work (we have a kiln!), origami, yoga, etc.

The activities run for 3 full afternoon sessions (one per week). Nov 3, 17 & 24.

You will have the same group each week so you could build on what you are doing! We anticipate the groups to be about 10-15 students but we can adjust the numbers if necessary.

If you are willing to run a group, but need ideas, we can help you out!

A current Criminal Record Check is required.

Welcome Back Information from Mrs. Taylor

Dear Silver Star Families:

We are about to begin another exciting year here at Silver Star Elementary! It is our pleasure to

welcome all our returning families and to say a special “Hello” to our new families. We look forward to meeting you and getting to know all the members of our school community. All staff are looking forward to working and learning with you and your child this year.

We rely on you and our community partners to be active members of the Silver Star learning team!

We take pride in our community and continue to promote a culture of respect, kindness, and

engagement in our school. Our students are at the centre of our decisions and together we support

their continued educational, social, emotional growth and well-being. Our school team will ensure that our learning environment is a safe and engaging one.

Our journey together begins on Tuesday, September 5th when students will attend from 8:30 –

11:30 a.m. On that first morning, staff will be outside to welcome all students onto the playground.

When the bell rings at 8:25 a.m. we ask students to go to their line ups, where they will be greeted by their teachers.

The school office opens on Monday August 28 th . We will be working all week to take in new

registrations and finalize classroom placements. We will try our best for you to receive information indicating your child’s classroom teacher via email on Thursday or Friday or over the weekend prior to September 5th .

Please drop off after 8:10 if possible as that is when supervision begins. Students will be asked again this year to report to their classroom line up where teachers will escort them into the building at start of school, recess, and lunch. Remember to please check your emails during the next two weeks for important information! The newsletter will be out soon.

If, for any reason, your child will not be starting the school year with us as currently scheduled, please contact us as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Jacqueline Taylor
